September 12 is R U OK day 2024.
R U OK Day aims to encourage and start a meaningful conversation with those struggling with life and the theme for 2024 is – Ask R U Ok? Any Day.
Even though mental health has become a more accepted topic of discussion, it still remains taboo in some cultures due to misunderstanding and misinformation.
Earlier this year, I was part of an international book project with authors from Australia, South Africa, Canada, and the UK. We shared our life stories and highlight the importance of mental health. Last Saturday, I had the privilege of participating in a mental health event where I shared a part of my personal story.
As a survivor of assault and PTSD, I understand the importance of seeking early support and help. Despite seeking treatment early, it took me over 10 years to open up about my experience due to fear of judgment. I remember resisting the idea of seeking medical treatment because I didn’t want to be labelled as “crazy.” I tried to ignore what happened to me, but my panic attack symptoms eventually led me to seek help and be admitted to the hospital.
As a business owner, it’s important to remember that we are like an umbrella that provides support for our family and staff. There’s often an assumption that we have to be strong and seeking help would make us appear weak.
But the truth is, running a business is tough, and we can’t help others if we’re not okay ourselves. There are many resources and supports available, such as:
– Lifeline Australia: 13 11 14
– MensLine Australia: 1300 78 99 78
– Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467
– Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636
– NSW Health Mental Health Line: 1800 011 511
Taking care of yourself is not selfish. Seek support early, and perhaps one day your story will make a difference in someone else’s life.
