Business Advice: Making Your Own Luck

Article by Michael Todd, Business Advisor, Western Sydney Business Centre

The best way to predict the future is to invent it. In other words, you make your own luck.

I am a true believer in this. However you want to put it, by putting yourself in the right positions and walking the talk, we have the power to create our own destiny.

Success is where preparation and opportunity meet. Drawing from my own and my client’s experiences that I have been a part of, many pivotal moments happened seemingly at random. The events were never planned or well thought out. But had we not been present and willing to trust our gut feelings and go for the opportunities that presented themselves, nothing would have happened.

We tend to view positive experiences as if we just happened to be in the right place at the right time, but that isn’t always correct. It is you that is making an effort to put yourself out there and you’re taking a risk because you have no idea if what you’re doing is a good idea.

Be optimistic: Optimistic people naturally create lots of good luck. Positive people view the world with optimism. When bad things happen, and they do to everyone, it is their optimism that makes them extremely resilient. They are able to pick themselves up and take these challenges on.

Be open to possibilities: Get to know as many people as you possibly can and build an extensive network of contacts. Constantly be on the lookout for potential opportunities, and work hard to make them happen.

Listen to your gut: People don’t listen to their inner voice enough. We have all had moments where we wish we had trusted our gut feeling. Calm your thoughts act upon your inner voice.

Always learn: There are resources everywhere. Never accept complacency and always try to improve yourself. Attend events, meet with trusted contacts and invest in yourself. There is never a finish line in your development.

Aim very high: Our minds are very powerful. Set goals that you think are hard to achieve. If you can see it happening, then it definitely is achievable. Taking opportunities and making the most of them is how we make our own luck.
